What is Reiki?

What is Reiki? Reiki is regarded as a complementary healing modality, that can be used in harmony with Western medicine or other natural healing, and not as an alternative to it. It is Universal Energy Healing – and ancient healing art that was rediscovered in the nineteenth century. It has Japanese/ Indian/ Tibetan origins and  is secular or non denominational Energy healing. It works by assisting the body to naturally heal itself.

Visualize a  broken bone that is set by a doctor. That bone cannot be knitted back together using western medicine, instead, the body has to heal the bone itself. Reiki can assist in the speedy recovery of that broken bone.

You do not have to be ill or injured to receive Reiki, as Reiki can be used to maintain a balance in mind, body, spirit and emotion, and to relieve stress of daily life. In this way, the client can take a more proactive role in their overall health similar to leading a healthy lifestyle of eating reasonable quantities of nutritious foods and incorporating some form of exercise into their daily routine.

IMG_6739 what isReiki is channeled through a practitioner whose hands are guided by the Reiki channel, as they are merely the willing conduit. The Reiki channel is pulled by the client. The Reiki channel will be guided to the area of the client’s greatest need and for the clients’ Highest and Greatest good, which could be physical, mental, emotional or spiritual.

During Instruction, and before proceeding from one Reiki level to another, an attunement is required, which is the most anticipated moment when the instructor creates the pathway for the Universal Healing Energy to flow through the student after all the course work, tutorials and practicing is satisfactorily completed.

If healing energy was represented as sound waves ( and sound is energy!) the distinct Reiki “levels” would be the keys on a giant keyboard and the practitioner simply “plays that note” (ie. taps into that specific Universal Healing Energy vibration) and allows it to flow through him or her and to the recipient. Different Reiki styles with different “methods” or “levels” can be compared to practitioners “playing different notes” of the Universal Healing Energy “keyboard”. How magical it is to listen to an entire orchestra performing, as compared to just one instrument, although each instrument has its place in an orchestra and each instrument can play exquisite solo.

Attunement opens a Reiki Channel within the Student that is there for life.

There are 5 Principles of Reiki:

  • Just for today, I will not fear
  • Just for today, I will not be angry
  • Just for today I will be grateful
  • Just for today I will work hard and honestly
  • Just for today I will be kind to others

Every morning and night these principles are to be spoken and taken into one’s heart with hands in gassho mudra (prayer position).

I see this as Enlightenment 101 (baby steps) -taking one day at a time. This appeals to most people as it is an achievable goal.
