History of Reiki

Usui

Usui Reiki developed out of the enlightenment of Mikao Usiu on the sacred Mount Kurama in Japan in 1914.

MikaousuiDifferent versions of the history exist. It is said that there was a student in a class of Mikao who asked when they were going to be taught how to do miracle healing, and thus began the search for many ancient scrolls scattered across India, Tibet and Japan. Learned monks in Tibet had knowledge of scrolls describing ‘healing hands’ and Indian texts in Sanscrit referred to ‘healing hands’. Mr Usui then dedicated decades of his life to uncover the secrets of “ miracle healing”, through learning different languages in order to read and communicate with people from the different countries he visited on his honourable search. He ended up (in some versions of the story, he ended where he began his journey) in a Zen Buddhist monastery  where he was advised to meditate to find the answers. Mr Usui  then decided to ascend mount Kurama with 21 stones to count down 21 days of meditation. Thereafter he would either find enlightenment or the abbot at the monastery in the foothills would have to search for his body. It is said that he found enlightenment in the form of a great Light that beamed down on him and he saw the sacred symbols  that he had uncovered on his search . He came to a deep understanding  and spiritual enlightenment of the names and uses of the symbols on the 21st day and rushed down the mountain, injuring his foot. He intuitively placed his hands on his foot, and bleeding stopped and pain subsided. The story continues that on meeting the daughter of the fruit seller at the bottom of Mount Kurama , he placed his hands on her cheek, swollen with an infected tooth and thereafter the swelling and pain reduced. The abbot at the monastery had arthritis  that had forced him to take to his bed, and Mr Usui placed his hands on the arthritic site and the pain dissolved.  Mr Usui then realized that he had brought Universal Healing Energy back into living memory, and went on to teach and heal in Japan. Reiki was brought to North America by Ms Hawayo Takata who was visiting relatives in Japan, took ill, was treated at Mr Hayashi’s clinic (Mr Usui’s only student). She recovered fully, and demanded to learn Reiki. She returned to Hawaii in 1937, and began her practice and her teaching. It is said that Mr Hayashi passed, and all his students perished in the war, so Ms Takata was the only living person to know Reiki.

It has since been found that more students were still living in Japan after the war and the tradition had continued, but it was more a “closed” tradition.

Furthermore, Mr Usui learned various Japanese energy systems before he was 18, including Ki-Ko, Qi Gong, and Menkyo Kaiden. He also changed vocations several times through his life. He grew up in the reign of Emperor Mutsuhito, an era of relative openness with borders open, industrialization, and Western influences which he exploited by traveling to Europe, China and the USA.

The story of his ascension up Mount Kurama is true . However it was some time before he realized the importance of his discovery and started teaching a basic “first level” Reiki to two thousand students, between 3- and 50 students were taught to the second level by him, and seventeen were taught to the Master level.

The story of Ms Takata bringing Reiki to the West has also been verified by researchers of Reiki seeking answers in Japan.

Different Reiki Styles

bee on flowerThere are more than fifty styles of Reiki at work in the world today. The most popular is the Usui or the Tibetan Reiki.

Tera Mai Seichem Reiki devised by Kathleen Milner is also popular, using up to thirty symbols.

Celtic Reiki was developed by Martyn Pentecost in 2005 which had a major update in 2009. (www.mPowrUnlimited.com). Essentially it blends the energies/ wisdom of the Natural World into the healing process.

The Radiance Technique ® or Authentic Reiki ® or Real Reiki ® was developed by Dr Barbara Ray and has seven levels.

Angelic Reiki combines Usui and Shamballa (a style supposedly from Atlantis/ the Mediterranean) with angelic vibration in the form of Archangel Metatron.

Karuna Reiki ® was developed by William Lee Rand and the International Centre for Reiki Training and has 4 levels and 12 symbols.

Usui Reiki is regarded as an evolving Energy Healing system, with dedicated practitioners receiving additional sacred symbols via the Reiki channel, for use in their healing practice. Some keep these personal, and others share these symbols.

IMG_2093 Over many years of dedicated Reiki Practice in the Usui style of Reiki by 5 Reiki Master Practitioners in particular, there have been symbols, names of the symbols, directions on how to draw the symbols, and guidelines on the uses of the symbols, all channeled through these and other Masters.  The International Centre for Reiki Training is a true hub of Reiki training world- wide, and practitioners who channeled new symbols would share their knowledge of new symbols with the Centre.  Some of these symbols were integrated in Karuna Reiki after William Rand spent many hours working with the symbols, meditating on them and praying. Since that time many practitioners have also spent time working with the symbols and meditation and evolved the Karuna style further, by discovering new uses for these advanced levels of healing.
